I'll Fly Away... 2023 Aglianico
Notes from Tim Ward.
Chalmers Vineyard, Merbein, hand picked, hand destemmed with 10% whole bunch, wild fermented 3 weeks on skins, pressed to old oak puncheon for 2 years, racked to bottle. Aglianico is arguably Italy's 3rd most important red grape variety after Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. It's native home is Campania, which surrounds Naples. My version is grown by the titans of Italian grape varieties in Australia, the Chalmers family. It is deeply dark fruited with savoury, meaty earthiness and soft tannins. This is as close as I have ever come to a big red wine!
