2022 Bag of Bones Piquette
Notes from Dane...
This is one for the fun and the sun ! In both 2020 and 2021 we made a small amount of Piquette, only a handful of the 2021 bottles were released to some wine bars and restaurants here in Australia as the quantities were so small. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the beverage I’ll give a quick run-down. Traditionally Piquette was made as a drink to satiate farm workers and labourers in France over the last coup[le of centuries. It is made by adding water back to the grape pomace post-pressing for re-fermentation. It is usually quite dilute and water like. This one is not. We included a fair proportion of whole bunches into ours and as most of our fruit is pressed very lightly anyway and so has a lot left to give. It has resulted in quite a “full’ and reasonably (by Piquette standards) complex drink that does not lack any interest. It sits at about 5.7 % Alcohol so has enough substance to stand tall with Pet-Nats while still being very refreshing because of the low Alc and small h20 component, naturally this was Gippsland rain water from our own tank. Some of the varieties used, (there are a lot!), where Shcioppettino, Fiano, Pinot Gris, Vermentino & Syrah. It is medium bodied and has amazing aromatics ! It was bottled before the end of fermentation to give natural carbonation and it has been disgorged since. This is a super refreshing and interesting drink and perfect as an aperitif or for a bottle to share in the afternoon sun. Or possibly to refresh at the end of the night.. Very versatile Indeed. Sante!
