2020 Les Enfants Sauvages Bouche Bée
This straight Mourvèdre is dark and meaty and great drinking.
Carolin and Nikolaus Bantin have been making wine in the Côtes Catalanes region near Spain since 2002 after travelling from Germany to visit friends. They fell in love with the region, bought an old estate (now 9ha under vine), studied winemaking and applied biodynamic methods. Carolin trained with Olivier Pithon, who encouraged them to make their own wine rather than selling grapes to the co-op. In the vineyards – isolated and surrounded by garrigue – their own preparations of nettle, chamomile and horsetail are used instead of pesticides or herbicides. Their vines are cultivated in the traditional goblet style on clay and limestone soils. Grapes are harvested by hand and the wines, aged in cement or barrel, are gently handled without pumping. Freshness, finesse and easy, healthy drinkability are the keys.
