2019 Poppelvej Somewhere
From the Danish-born, McLaren Vale-residing winemaker Uffe Deichmann.
This young fella was introduced as a matter of priority by none other than Roger Pike of Marius wines, on a visit last year. Indeed, Roger transported me there, such was his suggestion to visit. Kind. Good wines emerged from that visit and better are here and coming. Fruit comes from MVale and AHills, au naturale winemaking follows. This one is raised in a concrete egg. It’s a sinewy and frisky syrah of dark fruit, huge embellishments of peppery spice, chewy, fine, Italianate tannins, indeed there’s a rasp of ferrous-earthiness that few get from this variety in Australia. While inky and deep, it’s a wine that feels fresh and frisky, a colt on the fly. It finishes long, chewy and lightly sappy. Pleasure zone with some seriousness alongside. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
