2018 Bodega Cueva Joy Ancestral
From his base in the village of La Portera, about an hour west of Valencia, Mariano Taberner bottles a range of exceptionally delicious and vibrant sparkling, whites, macerated whites and red wines (along with an extraordinary small range of beer, vermouth and blends of all three fermented with seawater).
This is a blend of Macabeo and Tardana, both lightly macerated and then blended with the lees of the red variety Bobal. The fermenting wine was run to bottle to finish primary fermentation, rested on lees and then disgorged earlier this year. This is exceptionally well made. The fruit here has a restraint and almost savoury edge thanks to the varieties used and is really quite brilliant at table.
