Purveyors of fine grape juice
2017 Sigurd Chenin Blanc clare valley, australia

Clare Valley and chenin blanc, an unusual coupling but there you go.
Four rows on a single block. The vineyard, which belongs to Richard Hughes (father of John Hughes!) is shifting into organic farming on this site. It sees 50% whole bunch macerated for 12 days. The wine is matured in Russian oak, with some new puncheons included. The caveat with this wine now is ‘open and decant, drink after a few hours’.
Savoury chenin. Almond paste scents, grapefruit, vanilla whiffs, oatmeal. The palate has a lively burst of rich citrus character, more of the almond-peanut nuttiness, a touch of clove, bustling saline acidity. The palate does finish with a kind of overcooked oats feel, a smudge of additional savouriness (though it seems to dissipate and acid increases with time). Quite an out there, wild chenin, but exciting (and delicious) in its expression. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
