2017 Matassa Coume de L'Olla Rouge
Domaine Matassa was formed back in 02’ when New Zealander Tom Lubbe purchased ancient, 100+ year old vines, on the remote hillside of Vivier in Roussillon. Focusing on northern Catalan varieties, the vines are farmed according to biodynamic principles, with a natural logic following in the cellar. Coming off both old vines grown on limestone and rich red iron, the Coume Rouge sits in its own category - white (Macabeo), grey (Grenache Gris) and red (Grenache Noir) grapes are harvested and fermented together in whole bunches for 2 weeks before being aged in concrete tanks for 8 months. A lean, light in alcohol and mineral driven wine that doesn't mind a bit of chilling, Tom's efforts at freshness in a bottle are as brilliant here as ever.
