2017 Little Things Joy’s Wild Fruits
This vineyard was planed in 1997 on sandy soils over ironstone. High altitude and close proximity to the ocean provide perfect cool climate for growing. Olive and natives line the vineyard to provide protection from the wind. A lot of work pruning and shoot thinning has been done this year looking towards the 2018 harvest and to potentially taking on all the viticulture. We came about this vineyard quite late in the harvest and it seemed an ideal opportunity to make a field blend. Pinot Gris, Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet all at different stages of ripeness were picked on one day true to the style. They were de-stemmed and left to ferment on skins for over a week. They were then pressed to 2 tanks with one being racked of lees a week later. Although predominantly white grapes (if you consider Gris white) this wine drinks like a light red. Super bright cocktail of red fruits and citrus with savoury fennel and gentle notes of wood spice.
