2016 Serafino Rivella Barbaresco Montestefano

Crisp, firm in acidity, strawberries, redcurrant, cherries and hazelnut, aniseed, suede leather, undergrowth and exotic spices.
Medium-bodied, brisk, light rasp of tannin and firm acidity, cherry and dried herb, distinct orange tang through it, but sweetness of red fruits is there with sage and animal hide to temper. Stony feel is noticeable, and very attractive. Finish is tight, and a little edgy, but as it unfurls, it shows its class some more. Reticent on opening, and some of the sotto voce ‘rustic’ characters give me pause, though that can happen with some bottles and not others, or happen at a certain stage of evolution. These wines can be misleading, is my experience. Anyway, will see how the other bottles play out in the cellar. The upshot is good, but not great, with a question mark raised over its future.
