2016 Ruggabellus Solumodo
Notes from maker and grower, Abel Gibson..: 68% Semillon, 28% Riesling, 4% Muscat, 82 cases made, avg. 236days on skins. The Semillon vines are approximately 60 years old and up high here in the Eden valley - 500m elevation. The skins are thinner than Riesling skins and ripen earlier, they seem well suited to such a long soak with the wine (365days for this parcel) adding a wonderful nutty ginger complexity to the natural waxy, pear blossom, cut dry grass characters of the vineyard. They are pressed extremely gently and transferred to 2 neutral old hogsheads for the remaining 12 months. The second hogshead is topped with a combination of Riesling and Muscat, Riesling for acidity and Muscat for some floral/grapey aromatics. After the 2 years elevage the wine is assessed and this year we made the decision to blend in more Riesling (from the 80yr old block used in Quomodo - situated within a long stones throw of the Semillon). As with the other whites it spends 3 months in tank prior to bottling and 3 months in bottle before release in September, 2.5 years after the grapes were picked.
