Purveyors of fine grape juice
2016 Patrick Sullivan Volcan Springs Pinot Noir gippsland, australia
$60

From a 40-year-old vineyard in Leongatha.
The site is dry-grown and organically farmed. This is closer to Pat Sullivan’s own farm in Gipplsand, from which all ‘Patrick Sullivan’ release wines will come from in future. From his earlier, lurid-coloured releases (and some brilliant wines still come in strip club lighting scheme colours), Pat has created quite a following, but is now focussing on his own farming and life as a vigneron (though the farm is mixed agriculture).
Mellow perfume shows red berry fruits, pretty, sweet spice notes, brambles, fennel and some fresher, leafier notes. It’s quite beautiful, Autumnal in a way. The palate is silky as, lifted on spice and cool acidity, sleek in its draw across the palate with ultra fine, pumice stone-like tannins building as it rolls. The finish is an awesome pucker, the wine alive with its cornucopia of fruits, spices, perfume and herbs. Memorable wine. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
