Purveyors of fine grape juice
2016 Murdoch Hill Sulky Rouge adelaide hills, australia
$35

Intended as a light, vibrant red wine, something of a metier for Murdoch Hill’s ‘Single Batch’ or I guess you could call it, ‘horse cart’ range.
A mesh of red grapes that includes Syrah (pressed off early), Merlot, Pinot Meunier and a couple of percent of Sauvignon Blanc that got co-fermented with the syrah. I tried a wine open for a few hours and open a day – I relish and am grateful for that from winemaker visits. Curious but attractive perfume that makes me think first of cherry cola, then raspberry, then struck match/flint reduction kicks in (even when opened a couple of hours, disappears after a day). It’s savoury, elemental in earthiness and even shows a touch of sea spray in its perfume. Sloshes around in the palate, has a meaty-reductive, gamey character throughout, finishes long. Sits fresh on vibrant acidity and finishes lip-smacking-refreshing. Unusual personality, but engaging, and makes you go back for more. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
