2016 Maison en Belles Lies Maranges
After a long professional life in the fashion and garment industry in Paris, Pierre Fenals decided to follow his heart and moved to Burgundy to become a winemaker. The below notes are translated from Pierre's French tasting notes... Harvest is done by hand picking in small crates of 20kg. The grapes are sorted at the pick and at the winery. The grapes go straight to large wood vats. Whole bunches, no de-stemming, no chaptalisation, no sulphur, natural yeasts, control of temperatures, soft vinification during one lunar month. Light extraction, one pump over for homogenisation at the beginning. Treading at a very small scale. Very light pressing on a vertical hydraulic press. Assembly of run and press juices after tasting, at the end of maturation. Maturation on lees for 14 months in 3-year-old oak barrels, no new barrels, no sulphur. Racking and light sulfitage before bottling, no fining, no filtration, bottling by gravity at the estate.
