2016 Cacique Maravilla Pipeño País (1L)
Manuel Moraga is the seventh generation of Gutierrez to tend these vines in Yumbel, Bío Bío Valley, planted by his great-great grandfather over 250 years ago. A great drinking buddy and a political voice to be reckoned with, Manuel has changed almost nothing in the vineyard and in the winery. He won’t drink anyone else’s wine. He is the only person in his community to bottle commercially. He is a staunch countryman. 2016 was a cooler year with good rainfall during the growing season. Hand-harvested end of April. Fully destemmed. Wild ferment outdoors in open raulí lagar (a massive foudre of native beech used by the family every vintage for over one hundred years). 10 day maceration with manual punchdowns. 2 weeks later juice taken to plastic ecotank. One decantation. Bottled at 7 months. No fining or filtration and zero SO2.
