2015 Schnabel Blaufränkisch Vom Sausal
Incredible wine from schist and qaurtz soils on the Sausal mountain in south Styria. This hill rose from the ocean floor 300 million years ago so Karl's three vineyards have zero limestone - just pure slatey schist. Karl's vineyards are as close to real permaculture as I've ever seen in a vineyard. Karl never ever cuts the grass in the mid rows and this hillside has never been treated with synthetic treatments. Karl planted the vineyards around 20 years ago and the wines have a palate length that suggests the vines are 60-80 years old - quite incredible. This cuvée is a blend of the two Blaufränkisch vineyards. Fruit is selected extremely carefully, fermented in tank and then elevage is in wood for almost a year.
