From Palmento Caselle Contrada, a .5 hectare terraced vineyard, at an altitude of 900 meters on Mount Etna’s eastern slope. The vines here are ungrafted Carricante that had been propogated from various cutting that Salvo had taken from exceptional vineyards over the years. The soil is sandy volcanic with a substantial portion of ripiddu, Sicilian for lapilli and eruptive pumice from the volcano. The altitude and aspect of the vineyard give conditions more like the mountains of Trentino than eastern Sicily. The temperature variation and higher rainfall suit the flinty character of Carricante which give clarity and focus not unlike a Alto-Adige Riesling. Amazingly pure and pristine, the wine has energy and focus and supreme drive.
