Purveyors of fine grape juice
2015 Domaine Valette Mâcon-Villages bourgogne, france

It may be a cliché, but at Domaine Valette growing grapes and making wine is art.
Gerard Valette forged a solid reputation in the Mâconnais for his fastidious organic farming and his early conversion to organics in the 1970’s. He worked his soils and pruned back hard to limit yield when others were pouring on herbicide and fertilizer to maximize production. He was also wise enough to work out where the best vineyards were and has hallowed holdings. Gerard was joined by his eldest son Philippe (pictured above) in the early 90’s who turned out to have the same intuition in the cellar as his father had in the vines. In fact that may be understating it, Philippe Valette is regarded by the French in the same special space as legends like Anselme Selosse.
This is from 40-year-old vines - bottled in March 2018 and aged in tank. Bright, platinum-white gold. Aromas of zesty lemon, verbena and minerals, with a marine lift. As with all the Valette wines this is intense in the mouth, saline and tightly wound with a beautiful caressing texture and a perfect thread of acidity to maintain energy and shape. This special wine has a succulence and lovely long mouth-feel. It's very fine, very mineral and very alive - all you have to do is just sit back and revel in the flavours. If you like the wines of Ganevat or Frédéric Cossard then you will love this.
