Purveyors of fine grape juice
2014 Ruggabellus Archaeus barossa valley, australia
$50

This is a blend of syrah 77%, mataro 13% and grenache 10%.
If you were going to generalise about Ruggabellus 2014 releases you’d say this is in the more ‘traditional’ vibe of Barossa Valley reds, and certainly shifts a bit from the soul of Ruggabellus’ greyhound-like Timaeus and Efferus releases. Fluus is always playful, Archaeus shows some plushness. The latter two could satisfy traditionalists, perhaps.
Warm spice, ripe red and black berry fruits, pepper and rosemary herbal notes, touch of boysenberry jam but not overly rich in scent, but very attractive. It’s fleshy and juicy in the palate but with gentle herbal notes and chalky fringes lending structure. Surprising sappy tannin profile amongst the ripe fruit and then sour-sweetness of fruit character. Medium bodied, very pure feeling, pushes across the palate with good length. A real gulper, but has enough chew and detail. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
