Purveyors of fine grape juice
2014 Domaine Valette Vire-Clessé bourgogne, france

It may be a cliché, but at Domaine Valette growing grapes and making wine is art.
Gerard Valette forged a solid reputation in the Mâconnais for his fastidious organic farming and his early conversion to organics in the 1970’s. He worked his soils and pruned back hard to limit yield when others were pouring on herbicide and fertilizer to maximize production. He was also wise enough to work out where the best vineyards were and has hallowed holdings. Gerard was joined by his eldest son Philippe (pictured above) in the early 90’s who turned out to have the same intuition in the cellar as his father had in the vines. In fact that may be understating it, Philippe Valette is regarded by the French in the same special space as legends like Anselme Selosse.
From 60-year-old vines - aged for 30 months in older barrels. The soils here are more 'Calcaire' (they contain more limestone) The nose is incredible and bursts with citrus blossom, pear and hazelnuts, the impression is rich and powerful. Lovely concentration but very tight and lean in the mouth but with the Valette signature freshness and lively acidity that keeps you wanting more; this is delicious! A very powerful and intense wine and one to keep. This is about one third the price of decent 1er Cru White Burgundy and at least it's equal!
