Purveyors of fine grape juice
2013 Eastern Peake Walsh Block Syrah ballarat, australia
$40

From ‘next door’ (over the fence) from the Eastern Peake Ballarat estate vineyard.
A smidge of whole bunch in the natural ferment, then hangs out in concrete tanks, then in wood for 12 months. Bottle aged then released. A seriously good producer mostly flying under the radar here. Hang the (good!) score, this might just be top ten for Autumn 2017 for me.
My word, delicious. Medium weight with that perfect mesh of red berry fruits, game meat, autumnal savouriness, spread of sandy tannins and lightly bitter, refreshing natural acidity. The perfume is almost savoury Burgundy-like, but that’s silly parallels, isn’t it? It’s red berries, cranberry, rose petal, lavender, pepper and more meaty-earthy character. Such wonderful character, freshness yet depth, glorious texture, sweet fruit peppered with personality. Unreal. Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
