2018 Smallfry Fool's Gold Riesling
Notes from big Wayne Ahrens! As we progress I am more and more intrigued by making natural ferment white wines, all of our reds have been natural from the start but with whites it has been a work in progress. This is the second vintage of this wine, made from our Eden Valley Riesling hand picked a few days earlier than the standard version. Whole bunch pressed through our basket press to ss tank then left to it’s own devices, went through primary and secondary ferment and then sat on gross lees for 6 months before bottling. The crown seal is a simple way for us to bottle en casa so isn’t indicative of a pet nat though as a truly hermetic seal it is a good option for low SO2 wines. I see a fair bit of typical Riesling character on this wine of honey and lemon lozenge kind, finishes with a zesty acidity but it is the mid palate that I am most proud of, a good balance between depth and lightness. Good for fuller flavoured dishes like Kim Chi or Pollo A La Plancha.
